In news around the world, Dale is preparing for Alex Chidiac’s debut for JEF Chiba in Japan’s WE League.
There’s almost always Nordic news, and although we ran out of time to talk about it, here’s an update from Steffen.
Nordic
Norway Toppserien Round 7
It has been three rounds since the last episode and there is now just one team instead of four with max points (after Vålerenga lost to Rosenborg a few nights ago).
(7) Klepp IL (Nikola Orgill) played Teagan Micah’s Sandviken at home last night, losing 1-3. After a good start to the season, Klepp have found the going tougher in recent rounds. Nikola has missed the last 2 rounds with injury but started against Sandviken (as did Teagan).
(4) LSK Kvinner FK (Karly Roestbakken) undefeated after 4 rounds but then found the going tougher against successive top 4 opponents. They bounced back well this weekend with a 4-0 win over 9th placed Stabæk. Karly’s rehab is progressing and she is able to commence running shortly.
(2) IL Sandviken (Teagan Micah) have won 6 games and drawn 1. They are yet to play 2 of the 3 top four teams. In an Instagram story this morning Teagan mentioned the game against Klepp is her last, handing over the gloves to another Sandviken keeper (!)
Sweden Damallsvenskan Round 11
(2) BK Häcken (Dylan Holmes) won 6-2 at home against 3rd place Kristianstad, with Dylan coming on late.
(4) Hammarby (Elise Kellond Knight) lost 0-1 at home against 7th placed Vittsjö (Emily Gielnik and Clare Polkinghorne). Kellond-Knight made her debut, coming on as a sub for the last 10’. Emily was subbed off for the last 15’ for Vittsjö.
(1) FC Rosengård (Charli Grant) drew 0-0 with 8th placed Orebro. Charli was an unused sub.
Denmark
2021 season kicking off on Saturday 7 August where we will see Australians playing for Fortuna Hjørring (Indiah Paige Riley, Clare Wheeler, Angie Beard, Alex Huynh) and AGF Aarhus (Hannah Bacon).
Iceland Round 8
(Emma Checker played 90’ for UMF Selfoss (3) in a 0-0 draw with bottom side Tindastoll, continuing Selfoss’ recent downturn in form, but they retain 3rd place.
NPLW Roundup
NSW are still in lockdown but fingers crossed all will be ok soon.
ACT – Round 12
There was a top of the table clash at Deakin Stadium as the home side triumphed 3-1 over Belconnen, with Grace Gill scoring 2.
There has been some player movement prior to the June 30 cutoff and one of them sees West Canberra’s Tiana Jaber with Belco as of last week.
Canberra Olympic won 6-0 over Wagga City. Ash Sykes starred and showcased her growth in understanding with Raechel Hardwicke and Anna Vandenbroucke, both of whom joined this season. Ally Cook in moving into midfield from defence and was able to display more of her ball playing ability. For Wagga it was terrific to see Piper Lockley return from injury, and for Olympic it was nice to see one of B90’s CB’s of season 2020 Ella Hemmings returning for her first run (as a sub) for the season.
Gungahlin United fo an important 3-2 over CUA at home, with a brace by Nat De Marco proving decisive. The win was achieved without Michelle Heyman taking the field for the Gunners.
Continuing some good form from last week after picking up their first point vs Academy, Tuggeranong United were leading West Canberra at home with 15 minutes to go before conceding two.
One point separates ladder positions three through six, and there has been significant movement again with Academy dropping from 3rd to 6th and Olympic leaping into 3rd. West Canberra round out the top 4.
Queen of the Week
We deal four Queens of the Week on air, plus Steffen adds one after the fact.
Eric clears his pod backlog selecting two queens because he didn’t get the chance to nominate one on the last pod!
The first is Hannah McNulty from NPL NSW side Northern Tigers. They were behind in their most recent game against APIA Leichhardt, Hannah came off the bench and scored an 88th minute equaliser. Hannah is also close to 100 1st Grade appearances for Tigers, she coaches Tigers youth teams, she helps coaches at local community clubs, she’s completed her B Licence and is only 22 years old. Most importantly, Eric discovered recently that she has a degree with an economics major, just like him!
The second is Sarah Easthope from NPL 2 NSW leaders Nepean FC. The one-time Australian Schoolgirls Representative and (literally) one-time Sydney FC goalkeeper is the anchor of the league’s stingiest defence, they’ve only conceded six goals in 11 games and have kept six clean sheets, more than any other team. It will not surprise you to learn that Sarah has a futsal background – she was the 2019-20 NSW Futsal Premier League 2 Goalkeeper Of The Year.
Dale revisits the good ole days when Jasmyne Spencer played in the W-League and Steffen adds CCFC’s Alice Churchill has played 201 games for the club over 13 years and remains as much a vital cog in that team as ever. Alice also baked the 100 game celebration cake for teammate Jamie Berkeley.
