After less than a year at the helm of NPLW side Curtin University, coach Domenic Gangemi has resigned from the club with immediate effect.
A former semi-pro player, Gangemi joined the club as head coach in June 2021. Gangemi’s CV includes a PRO UEFA A Licence, plus experience at Juventus, Lazio and Sampdoria. He is now employed by Atalanta as a professional scout, and it is the demands made on his time by this role that has forced him to resign.
“With the state borders now open, my employer is expecting me to travel a lot more, and it’s not fair on the team if I can’t be 100% committed to the coaching role, and it is for this reason that I have decided to leave,” he said.
“It was a great experience for me to coach the team, and I learned a lot about female football in my short time at the club. The players are dedicated and work hard and it’s better that someone else takes the role and continues what we started,” he added.
Gangemi had brought in a more professional environment at the club, but his hopes of building on his first season in charge were hampered when they lost experienced players such as Tanya Campos and Jess Darmargo during the pre-season. They weren’t able to recruit players of a similar standard to replace them and, as a result, the team has struggled so far this season. They currently sit bottom of the table without any points after four games and lost 4-1 to Balcatta Etna in the battle of the cellar dwellers on Sunday.
Their next game is against the Hyundai NTC on Friday night with assistant coach Chez Cecchi likely to be in the coaches’ dugout.
