Hásteinsvöllur in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland, home ground of IBV

With up to ten Australians competing in top level domestic Nordic competitions in 2020, Beyond 90 will be keeping readers up to date with how our players and the teams they are playing in are faring.

Coming off the international break, Emily Gielnik – clearly loving life in the Swedish Damallsvenskan – once again led the Aussie playing reel highlights this week, scoring her fifth goal in six games as Vittsjö GIK drew 1-1 with Djurgårdens.

There was mixed success and news for the Aussie contingent in Round 13 of the Toppserien on the weekend.

Nikola Orgill played 82 minutes in Kolbotn‘s home game against (then) second placed Rosenborg. The 2-2 result allowed Orgill’s Canberra United co-captain Karly Roestbakken and LSK Kvinner to climb one position on the Toppserien ladder.

LSK Kvinner‘s Karly Roestbakken can hold her head high for the job she has done in the last couple of months at centre back. However, with the return of Malin Brenn, Roestbakken had to bide her time on the bench in LSK’s 2-0 home victory over Røa Dynamite Girls. Roestbakken was to come off the bench in the 77th minute and into a more familiar right back role.

Both Clare Polkinghorne and Katrina Gorry played a full game for Avaldsnes in their 1-1 away draw with Lyn, a game in which they would have been gunning for all three points. Credit goes to Lyn for their performance, boosted by the addition of Mimmi Löfwenius (until recently with LSK Kvinner), which belied their ladder position.

The news was not so good on a personal note for Arna-Bjørnar‘s Teagan Micah, as this Instagram photo from her suggests:

Micah was not on the Arna-Bjørnar match card as they fell 2-0 away to Sandviken. Beyond 90 will once again follow Micah and Arna-Bjørnar’s progress once Micah is back on deck, but if this doesn’t happen, Micah will look back fondly on her time in the Toppserien as first choice keeper for her team, having the honour of making the Toppserien Team of the Week back in Round 2.

Emily Gielnik scored Vittsjö GIK‘s only goal on 56 minutes – cementing herself as a vital attacking cog in the team if she wasn’t already considered as such – in their Round 16 1-1 draw at home against Djurgarden on Sunday. The home side will be disappointed they didn’t put this game away, with a number of decent chances unable to be converted.

A fine 1-3 away win to fourth placed UMF Selfoss granted a valuable three points to Laura Hughes and Thróttur Reykjavik. Hughes played all but the last minute of the game.

Fifth placed Stjarnan however, managed to win 2-0 away to Angie Beard‘s KR Reykjavik, a result which sees KR prop up the ladder. Looks are deceiving however, as Beard’s team have played two games less than some teams, and three games less than others.

In Round 8 of the Elitedivisionen in Denmark, Indiah-Paige Riley‘s Fortuna Hjørring continued a purple patch against Nordsjælland by trouncing them for the second time in successive games, this time winning 5-1 at home. Riley was an unused substitute for this game despite her goal-scoring spree in the last outing.

Hannah Bacon played half a game as her AGF Aarhus team were on the receiving end of a 3-0 defeat away to HB Køge. This was AGF’s second successive league game against HB after losing the first game 4-1.
