Hásteinsvöllur in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland, home ground of IBV

With up to ten Australians competing in top level domestic Nordic competitions in 2020, Beyond 90 will be keeping readers up to date with how our players and the teams they are playing in are faring.

In a week where two Norwegian Toppserien rounds were played, Katrina Gorry scored her second goal for Avaldsnes and Karly Roestbakken made a Toppserien team of the round.

Emily Gielnik continued on her goal scoring ways in Sweden, and we check in on Hannah Bacon and her time this season to date in the Danish Elitedivisionen with AGF Aarhus.

Round 9 of the Toppserien was a midweek affair played Thursday morning Australian time. Potentially with a foot injury that is exacerbated by playing on hard artificial surfaces, Kolbotn opted to leave Nikola Orgill on the bench for their away game against Roestbakken’s LSK Kvinner. Roestbakken started once again at centre back and was subbed out in the 92nd minute in LSK’s 3-1 victory.

Elsewhere in Round 9, Teagan Micah played a full game in goals for Arna-Bjørnar in their 0-1 home loss to Sandviken. Over at Klepp Stadion, AvaldsnesKatrina Gorry was yellow carded after four minutes but went on to play 72 minutes – while Clare Polkinghorne played a full game – as their team won 1-2 away to Klepp. Elise Thorsnes scored both goals for Avaldsnes.

Just two days later Round 10 kicked off, and there were positive results all round for our Aussie contingent, many of them against equal placed or higher placed opponents.

In the only Saturday game, Gorry scored her and Avaldsnes’ 2nd goal in their 4-0 win over bottom placed Røa Dynamite Girls.

Micah’s Arna-Bjørnar drew 1-1 away at third placed Rosenborg (previously known as Trondheims-Ørn), while Orgill played 64 minutes in their scoreless home draw against ladder leaders Vålerenga.

Roestbakken’s LSK Kvinner found their way back into the winner’s circle again with a second successive win, this time 0-1 away to equal placed Sandviken. Roestbakken had a tough individual marking assignment against an quick opponent with fast feet – Kennya Cordner – which also suited Roestbakken’s strengths, so it was an absorbing battle to take in. At one point Roestbakken conceded a penalty against Cordner, however it was not converted. Roestbakken’s efforts were recognised by the Toppserien as she found herself in the league’s Team of the Week for the first time. Her captain Emilie Haavi was named August player of the month for the league.

“We are very satisfied. We have contributed much to ourselves this summer and it was good to be able to finally celebrate. This was a huge victory for us and something we needed to keep” – Stephanie Ribeiro, first goal scorer for Thróttur [translated from Icelandic by Google Translate]; article courtesy mbl.is.
