The Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Finland) have long been a viable destination for Aussie footballers, and 2021 looks to be no different with over a dozen players choosing the Nordic countries as their playground.

Read on for two Aussies making their club debuts in Sweden and plenty more!

There was no Toppserien action in the last week for either Karly Roestbakken‘s LSK Kvinner or Nikola Orgill‘s Klepp. Roestbakken, however, has finished quarantine and by the time of publication should have participated in her first training sessions since returning to Norway.

Prior to the coming weekend’s Toppserien action, both teams were scheduled to play midweek Cup games against tier 2 teams, however Klepp’s game against Grimstad was postponed the day before kickoff.

LSK’s Cup game resulted in a 2-9 away goal-fest against Grand Bodo, with Camilla Linberg bagging four goals.

The summer break in the Swedish Damallsvenskan competition is over and Round 13 games commenced on the weekend.

Winonah Heatley‘s Växjö DFF did well in their return to action, picking up a point in a 0-0 home draw against Emily Gielnik and Clare Polkinghorne‘s Vittsjö GIK, who sit six positions above Växjö. The game marked Heatley’s debut in the Damallsvenskan and she played the full 90 minutes.

New FC Rosengård signing Teagan Micah was chosen for the matchday squad ahead of Canadian Olympic gold medalist keeper Stephanie Labbé and had an uneventful time of things in her debut. Micah’s team were comprehensive 6-0 winners at home over KIF Örebro, a team which held them to a draw just two rounds back. Charli Grant was not on the teamsheet for Rosengård but was enthusiastic in her support.

Elise Kellond-Knight‘s third-placed Hammarby IF lost 0-2 away to Eskilstuna United, with Kellond-Knight absent from the teamsheet.

BK Häcken won 3-1 away to fifth-placed Kristianstads in the round’s final fixture, and Dylan Holmes saw brief action as an 88th minute substitute. BK Häcken remain in second place, six points behind league leaders Rosengård.

Emma Checker played the full 90 minutes and led UMF Selfoss to a 6-2 home win over IBV in their Round 15 Úrvalsdeild Kvenna game earlier in the week. Selfoss led 3-0 at halftime and kept up the pressure to record their biggest league victory of the season with just three rounds to play. The win keeps them in fourth place.

In the 1.dield first division, Aideen Keane scored one goal and provided a massive assist in her second league game for KR Reykjavik, who won 6-0 at home over Vikingur. That’s two goals from her first two games so there’s clearly something about Icelandic football that agrees with Keane.

The result leaves KR in third place, also with just three league games left in the season.

Terrific news for Jenna McCormick as AGF announced her addition to the squad (Google translate recommended) for the rest of the Elitedivisionen season. McCormick has been with the club for a month, but no sooner was she announced than she was on the field, coming on in the 90th minute as AGF won 2-1 at home against Kolding BK.

The win lifts AGF out of the relegation zone and into fifth place.

For the first time this season, three out of the four Aussies based at Fortuna Hjørring started a game, in their 3-0 Round 3 home win against AaB. It seems for now as if the more Aussies that play, the better the team goes! Indiah-Paige Riley played 64 minutes, Angie Beard played 84 minutes, and Clare Wheeler played the full 90 minutes. Alex Huynh was not listed in the matchday squad.

Just two teams have three-wins-from-three-games records – Fortuna and HB Køge – but Fortuna sits on top of the ladder by virtue of goal difference.
