Canberra United recorded a 5-1 home win against the Jets at McKellar Park in their first meeting of 2022-23.

In a game where where both teams had plenty of shots but only one dictated proceedings, Lauren Allan looked most likely for the visitors in the first half with several chances missing the mark. The home side led 2-0 at halftime after the influential Nickoletta Flannery laid on goals for Michelle Heyman and Wu Chengshu. Returning to action after sustaining a facial fracture in the Round 2 game against the Roar, Wu and Ellie Brush were at the centre of a controlled performance.

Flannery also had a hand in Heyman’s second goal. Meanwhile, the impressive Vesna Milivojević landed a free kick perfectly for Brush to head in her first goal since returning from an ACL injury, before the Serbian playmaker finished off the scoring with a header of her own from Emma Ilijoski’s pinpoint cross.

Newcastle’s silver linings were Tara Andrews standing tall as striker in the second half, netting their only goal, plus the welcome returns of American imports Murphy Agnew and Sarah Griffith.
