Australia’s longest-running women’s football podcast (est. April 2019).

History: Leah Blayney, Matildas Cap 126

Matildas Debut: 2004 (played for the national team until 2006)
Grassroots Club: Wentworth Falls United
Appearances: 16
Position: Midfielder

These days, Blayney is known for being the Young Matildas head coach, but she was also a highly talented player before a serious ankle injury ended her career prematurely.

Blayney spent three seasons in the W-NSL between 2001 and 2004, making 21 appearances and scoring three goals for NSW Sapphires.

She was born on July 4, so it’s only fitting that the USA would be her next destination. Blayney played college soccer for Auburn Tigers and Central Connecticut Blue Devils, before returning home to join Sydney FC’s inaugural A-League Women squad in 2008. She would then go on to spend a season with Canberra United in 2010-11, as well as playing club football overseas for Boston Aztec, Boston Breakers and Eskilstuna United.

Blayney was a member of the Young Matildas squad that played in the 2006 U-20 World Cup. The next time Australia qualified for this tournament (2022), Blayney was the Young Matildas head coach.

In addition to Young Matildas duties, Blayney also heads the Future Matildas program and coaches at Westfield Sports High School.
