We celebrate making fifty episodes and, as always, recap a big week in football.

Rhali takes a break … from us … while she walks 150km to raise money for Brain Cancer awareness and research funding (Mark Hughes Foundation). Cheryl shares that she walked 3km and pulled a hammy, Dale dissects the latest Tillies match and Eric returned to his beloved container for NPLW.

NPLW Roundup

NSW Round 11

  • Blacktown Spartans 2-0 Emerging Jets – Eric returns to his beloved shipping container to call the match, with goals from Blacktown locals Ashlie Crofts and Ashley Calvar. Blacktown Spartans were a bit like the original Spartans from ancient history –  they were the only team on Sunday to defend their home territory.
  • Manly United 0-1 Illawarra Stingrays – the team affectionately known as “pink WSW” had a successful trip to Sydney’s Northern Beaches, scoring early and holding on to their lead.
  • Bankstown City 0-4 Sydney University – a good win for the Students. Bianca Galic scored, which helps Eric’s #Galic4GreenAndGold campaign, there was also a double from Kaitlyn Torpey and a goal from College Matilda Demi Koulizakis.
  • North West Sydney Koalas 2-3 APIA Leichhardt – APIA led 2-0 at halftime thanks to goals from Zoe Halpin and Newcastle Jets Player of the Year Rhianna Pollicina. Koalas came racing back in the second half, levelling the scores via Tahlia Macri and NPL NSW’s version of the Road Runner, Sophie Harding. Koalas went close to winning the game but it was APIA who prevailed with an 88th minute winner from College Matilda Julia De Angelis, assisted by Grace Maher
  • Football NSW Institute 0-1 Northern Tigers – a first-half penalty from Shay Evans was the difference, and Morgan Aquino came up big as well, saving a late penalty. This win takes Tigers to the top of the league
  • Macarthur Rams 0-1 Sydney Olympic – Macarthur lost after a late and unfortunate own goal from Hayley Taylor-Young. Olympic will move into first place if they win their catchup game against Sydney University on Wednesday (Eric will call Uni v Olympic and you can watch on NPL.TV!)

ACT Round 9

  • Canberra Croatia 4-1 West Canberra Wanderers
  • Wagga City Wanderers 3-0 Tuggeranong United – Congrats to Tuggeranong’s Lara Mustaine for 50 games.
  • Gungahlin United 2-3 Canberra Olympic – Michelle Heyman not on the Gunners teamsheet, still to make her debut.
  • Canberra United Academy 0-2 Belconnen United – Last round at home on synthetic, CUA upset the champs Canberra Croatia FC so there was much interest in whether they could also upset Belconnen United at home.
It was not to be… although the Academy played with heart and endeavour they couldn’t fashion enough clear cut chances. Belconnen were more potent in and around their opponents’ penalty area and had a bit more of the ball than their opponents. Read more in Steffen’s Round 9 wrap.
  • No movement on the ladder; Belconnen and Canberra Croatia FC stay on top, equal on points. Olympic’s win bring them within a point of third-placed Academy.

VIC

  • Still waiting to resume play after a COVID-19 lockdown delay. Restrictions have been eased so there is excitement games will continue shortly.

Queen of the Week

Cheryl gives out five Queen of the Week awards. Eric shares a big gong for Aoife Colvill. From Canberra United to Irish international … and sorry Dale, I couldn’t remember your pick.

Next Week

We start rolling out our Olympic coverage and our guest will be Emma Checker to talk about football and hopefully #plantbasedathletes.
