Kate Gill

Rhali returns, albeit with a broken leg, Dale worries about Eric in lockdown, Cheryl asks the dumb questions you all want to know the answers to, and Steffen delivers his Nordic wrap with promising news on Karly Roestbakken. All that, plus a super special guest!

Guest

Kate Gill (Matildas cap 127) is our special guest who works off the field every day to make football better. This month, Gill celebrates her one year anniversary at the helm of PFA as co-Chief Executive.

A prolific striker, Gill debuted for the Matildas at the age of 17, amassing 86 matches.

Domestically, Gill also played in the W-League (Newcastle Jets and Perth Glory) and won the Golden Boot twice, first in 2012-2013 and then 2014.

During the podcast, Gill reflects on her time in Sweden (Damallsvenskan) playing with AIK, Sunnanå, Malmo and Linköpings FC.

Gill was the first Australian to win AFC Women’s Player of the Year and part of the 2010 Asian Cup winning team.

Hot Topics

It’s only nine days until the first football match at the Tokyo Olympics. We continue with team previews and discuss the upcoming friendly between the Matildas and Japan.

Hot (bad) news hits our world, with Amy Chapman voted off the Football Queensland board.

Around the World

Nordic

Norway Toppserien Round 8

From when we last spoke, there is no longer a four-way logjam at the top of the table.

Teagan Micah, played her last game with IL Sandviken in Round 7, leaving just two Aussies in the Toppserien. Word is Teagan may return to the Nordic leagues after the Olympics.

(9) Klepp IL (Nikola Orgill) played Avaldsnes away on the weekend, losing 3-0. After 2 wins at the start of the season, Klepp have fallen away and now sit 2nd last. To make matters worse, it looked like Nikola pulled a hammy at the end of the first half, and she had to be substituted.

(4) LSK Kvinner FK (Karly Roestbakken) won 1-2 away at Kolbotn, scoring twice in the first 16 minutes in the rain. They remain 4th but have a big game against the champs Vålerenga coming up. Karly’s rehab is progressing and she has resumed running, posting on Instagram from the AIS fields. She will be returning to Norway soon and should hopefully be able to resume training with the LSK squad.

Sweden Damallsvenskan Round 12

Mid-season break with no games until late August.

Iceland Round 9

(3) UMF Selfoss (Emma Checker) Emma has captained the side in their last 2 games, and played 90’ in a home 1-2 loss against leaders Valur Reykjavik, perhaps indicating they are digging themselves out of a slump in recent rounds. They retain 3rd place.

NPLW Roundup

NSW is still in lockdown, but football continues. With Steffen sharing his ACT wrap and Cheryl suggests a cross State Golden Boot competition. Can anyone beat 15 goals so far from Melina Ayres?

ACT – Round 13

Belconnen 9 – 1 Tuggeranong, with 3 goals to Leah Carnegie and 2 to Talia Backhouse
Mid-table roller coaster continues.

West Canberra won 2-1 against Gungahlin United. West Canberra have recently lost the services of both Emma Stanbury and Tiana Jaber. West Canberra picked up midfielder Tara Cannon from CUA (originally from the West Canberra club).

Michelle Heyman played a full game for Gungahlin. One of those games where the Gunners had most of the possession but their shooting was wayward. West Canberra’s win was largely due to the efforts of Alex McKenzie (midfield) and Janet King (GK), while Sofia Chaverra Calle scored both goals – both very nicely taken – for West Canberra – see this week’s write-up.

Wagga City 0 – 8 Canberra Croatia, Brittany Palombi scored a ridiculous 5 goals, perhaps spurred on by the news of her sister coming into the squad for the balance of the campaign. Ash has been an important figure at APIA the last few years, captaining them for a time, but with an influx of talent, is no longer figuring in top grade team lists.

In the other big mid-table game, CUA defeated Canberra Olympic 3-2. Academy were without captain Annie Grove (who has just announced a move into US college football with UMBC based in Baltimore) but were up 3-0 at half-time with Olympic keeper Aurelia Haynes uncomfortable with the synthetic surface bounce at Hawker. Olympic were able to claw back 2 goals but were unable to complete the comeback.

The results see West Canberra and Academy in the top 4.

VIC – Round 11

  • Calder United ran away 3-0 winners over Box Hill, with Harriet Withers, Julia Sardo and Natasha Dakic. The win sees Calder hold on to third position, just above FV Emerging
  • Alamein lost at home to South Melbourne, with the league leaders put five past Beth Mason-Jones in goal, including two from Melina Ayres.
  • Bulleen Lions had the biggest win of the round, with a 7-0 victory over Heidelberg United. Alana Jancevski with a hattrick and Rachael Quigley with a brace
  • FV Emerging took the three points with a 2-0 win over Bayside United – Holly Furphy and Leia Varley the goalscorers

Also, keep a big eye out for the upcoming Nike FC Cup, with the Quarter Finals in your face this Tuesday and Wednesday.

Queen of the Week

Listen in for our Queens of the Week; suffice to say, Dale nods towards the NWSL for his Queen and a Joker. Steffen gives a shoutout to Maggie Murphy, and Cheryl throws light on Heather Reid and Amy Chapman.
