Matildas Debut: 2002 (played for the national team until 2004)
Grassroots Club: Maccabi and Balcatta (Perth)

Karp was selected in the Matildas squad for both the 2003 World Cup and 2004 Olympics. Domestically, she played eight W-NSL seasons (six for Canberra Eclipse, plus single campaigns with SA Sports Institute and Western Waves).

After her W-NSL days, Karp graduated with a arts/law double degree from The Australian National University in 2006. She would return to the field for two A-League Women seasons (2008-2010) and was Melbourne Victory’s inaugural captain.

Karp is now the CEO of YMCA Australia and is passionate about helping young people. The YMCA website has a nice story about Karp from her time working as a Legal Aid lawyer, which we recommend you read.

Queens of the Week

Cheryl – Here’s to Vera Pauw for taking the Republic of Ireland to their first Women’s World Cup qualification.

Eric – How could it be anyone else? The Republic of Ireland, my queens in green, qualified for their first Women’s World Cup by defeating Scotland 1-0. Five years ago, the squad protested the unacceptable treatment they received and threatened to go on strike, now they’ve made history!

Lachy – Jess Coates was inducted into the Hall of Fame for her college, Nicholls State, after a stellar playing career.

Maj – ABC journalist (and friend of Beyond 90) Samantha Lewis wrote this incredible piece on Sam Kerr’s rise to the top of world football. There are multiple videos and graphics embedded within the article – needless to say, we recommend that you read it if you haven’t already, and if you have seen this, we recommend that you read it again!

This teaser post Sam did for the ABC news Instagram account is also worth watching 🙂
