Statement made. South Hobart mean business this year, after knocking off last year’s Summer Cup finalists Kingborough Lions 5-2 away at Clennett’s Lightwood Park, with Bonnie Davies returning to electric form by scoring her first hat-trick for the year.

South coach Alastair Russell, backing up from the previous week’s 9-1 win over Metro, experimented once again with Niki Moutsatsos returning to the line-up and Ella McConnon on the bench. Moutsatsos is working her way back from a season-ending injury while McConnon, fresh off her move from Olympia, was sure to make an impact later on.

Kingborough remained unchanged with Amy Coward returning in goals and continuing rotation of that spot with Olivia Gardner. Last year’s number one Erika Mackintosh is currently unavailable until mid-2022 due to her recent undertaking of police work.

The home side never got out of the starting blocks with South having almost full control. After a gritty opening half-hour, Kingborough’s defensive wall was broken. Mia Cane (against her former side) produced some great combination play with Pishon Choi and Bonnie Davies. Davies’s shot was deflected off the boot of Lions’ Isabelle De Smit to give South a deserved lead.

Mere minutes later, Mia Cane linked up with her sister Issy and scored a long-range bomb which had the aid of the sticks on its way in, giving the visitors a 2-0 buffer.

Davies soon added to the tally in style. Darting through the midfield as has been her custom of late, Davies finished into the top right corner of the net on two occasions and extended the margin to 4-0.

Lions appeared to have a resurgence when captain Danielle Kannegiesser hit with sheer power into the back of the net, a goal which Kingborough desperately needed to bring it back to 4-1.

However, Davies soon extinguished any thought of a miracle comeback by finishing into the bottom right to complete her hat trick.

The balance of the game was controlled by South standout Eve Swain, whose hold up play and play-making was exceptional to watch.

It may not have been a successful team day for Lions, but Summer Cup debutant Cara Lashmar scored a lovely goal from just outside the penalty box. There was even some tears from club staff after what was a great moment.

Lashmar has recently been promoted to the first team after impressing in last year’s Southern Senior Youth Girls with a resounding 33 goals in just 12 games. Lashmar also capped off 2021 by making a maiden WSL and Southern Championship appearance.

South now sit at the top of the table with a mouthwatering clash against Clarence Zebras to come this weekend, while Kingborough will hope to dust themselves off in a must-win match against Olympia Warriors.

It was a day to forget for the travelling Metro as they were thrashed heavily by Olympia Warriors. Center-back Kate Ollerhead was one of the unlikely players to score not just one, but four!

Josi Mamic is now back to full fitness after last season’s comeback from an injury, and she bagged a brace while youngster Meggie Goscombe netted her first senior hat-trick.

It was another week for departures at Empire Couriers Park, with Charlotte Chambers heading to Queensland to begin her medical degree.

Chambers had 31 goals in 95 games for Olympia across all competitions from 2016-21, helping the club to a WSL title, as well as the Statewide Cup and Summer Cup trophies.

Clarence Zebras made it two wins from two, taking care of business by defeating Taroona 4-0 at KGV. Taylor Rand gave the captains’ armband to Lou Marmion before proceedings started and Rand then grabbed a first half brace, while Zoe Nichols added to the total and gave the home side a 3-0 lead going into the sheds.

Grace Pollard finished the game with her maiden senior goal. The Zebras comfortably sit second on the table ahead of their game against South Hobart.
