Tasmania’s Women’s Super League was put on hold this weekend for the Statewide Cup Round of 16. Beyond 90 takes you through all the action.
Kingborough Lions 6 (Holly Bonertz-Benn, Bronte Gadon, Laura Davis x3, Ellisa Bowditch og) University 4 (Erika Mackintosh og, Sophie Young, Zoe Lovell, Amber Johnstone)
Kingborough held off a very resilient University in a 6-4 thriller at Olinda Grove, advancing to the quarter-finals of the Statewide Cup.
This was not the Uni of old after their disappointing run in the WSL last year where they finished bottom, there were plenty of high marks awarded. Sophie Young, one of Uni’s unsung heroes from last year, scored a fantastic long range goal to put the hosts in front early in the first half. Young played her heart out, never giving up the chase and making dangerous runs past the defence, definitely one of the best players in this match.
Uni took an early lead through an own goal from Lions keeper Erika Mackintosh, but soon lost it after Holly Bonertz-Benn and Bronte Gadon steadied the Lions ship, making it 2-1 to Kingborough.
It was Uni’s turn to give away an own goal soon after but Young would regain hope for the Bees (as Uni like to be called). From just outside the box, Young managed to send a ball over Mackintosh’s head and into the bottom left, giving the students a well-needed goal before half-time.
Both sides put on a goalscoring clinic in the second half and handshakes were in abundance after what was a fantastic display of football.
University will now look towards their Southern Championship fixture against South Hobart, while the Lions will prepare to face Taroona in the WSL.
