One word summed up the cup weekend – incredible. B90 are here to take you through all the action.
Semi-Final One
Launceston United 3 (Danielle Gunton, Jess Robinson x2) Kingborough Lions 2 (Danielle Kannegiesser) at Lightwood Park, Saturday 29th May.
Launceston United rose from the dead in the Statewide Cup semi-finals in front of a rocking crowd at Lightwood Park. They came back from two goals down to win in stoppage time 3-2 over Kingborough Lions.
Danielle Kannegiesser netted a brace for the home side early in the second half, including a penalty conversion. Danielle Gunton and Jess Robinson then quickly erased all smiles.
Gunton and Robinson scored almost immediately after the 2-0 deficit, giving the first semi-final some needed life after a goaless first-half.
Robinson then turned the defence inside out quite literally in stoppage time to seal her second goal and a memorable victory for United.
With their victory this marks United’s first cup final in their inagural season playing in the top-flight. Quite the story!
Semi-Final Two
Olympia Warriors 1 (Madi Chambers) Clarence Zebras 0 at Warrior Park, Sunday 30th May.
Olympia Warriors have sneaked past a gritty 1-0 win over arch rivals Clarence Zebras at Warrior Park courtesy of Madi Chambers’ single goal. The two met in the grand final last year, with Zebras taking home the silverware, making this matchup all the more exciting.
From the get-go, both teams were more than happy to sit back and let one enough work their way through. The flanks of Chambers and Cane worked tirelessly but Taylor Rand and Selina Steventon stood firm.
Chambers scored before the break after displaying some great foot work. Darting past the defence that was looking strong, Chambers hit true into the bottom left past veteran keeper Shelley Cook to give the Warriors the 1-0 buffer.
Unfortunately, the second-half was lacklustre with neither team having the real edge. Zebras piled on the pressure in the last 15 minutes but were unable to break the clean sheet from their former keeper Kacee Ponting.
Ponting secured victory for Olympia in the dying stages pouncing on a pin balling effort in the box holding tight and in no rush. This proved to be the final meaningful moment of the game with Olympia securing their spot in the Statewide Cup final against Launceston United. This will be Olympia’s second consecutive year in the final – the question is, can they can get the job done this time round?
