Regular fixtures returned to the Tasmanian Women’s Super League on the weekend – champions regaining form, two away wins and much more!

Match of the Round: Clarence Zebras v Kingborough Lions

Clarence Zebras 3 (Allie Berry x3)
Kingborough Lions 3 (Danielle Kannegiesser x2, Laura Davis)

Clarence Zebras have come back from the dead with an amazing three goal second half comeback courtesy of the returning Allie Berry, with her hat-trick enough to snatch a 3-3 draw over Kingborough Lions at Wentworth Park.

Danielle Kannegiesser netted the first for the visitors from the spot against her former team. Laura Davis notched one shortly afterwards, giving the away side a two goal buffer at halftime.

Kannegiesser gave the Lions a three goal cushion with another spot kick conversion … and then Berry entered the field.

Having not played for a couple of weeks, Berry made her return in scintillating fashion with a top bins long range bomb past Lions keeper Erika Mackintosh, and that was only her first party trick.

Berry then slotted home into the bottom left after another darting one-on-one run and suddenly we had a game on our hands.

When Airlee Lawson brought Berry down in the box, referee Stratos Plomaritis pointed to the spot despite Lawson’s pleas. The decision stood and Lawson earned a yellow ticket.

Berry calmly converted and we were back to a level playing field. Davis had one last chance to seal a win for the Lions but her attempt was just wide.

Devonport Strikers 2 (Tahlia Boyd 13′, Jazmin White 47′)
Olympia Warriors 7 (Meggie Goscombe 16′, Madi Chambers 30′, 49′, 68′ 90′, Ella McConnen 70′, Mia Cane 75′)

Olympia’s Madi Chambers sent in dangerous intentions early with a lovely low cross to Mia Cane, who was denied by Strikers keeper Georgie Anderson.

Strikers got the early breakthrough after a fantastic through ball from Renske Rombouts to Tahlia Boyd. Boyd finished past debutant keeper Kacee Ponting, who has recently moved from Clarence Zebras – this marked Warriors’ fourth change of keeper after a succession of injuries.

Meggie Gosgombe quickly equalised after shooting true from an acute angle down the right flank, hushing the home fans.

Some one-two play between Inocent Michael and Mia Cane sent in Chambers, who weaved her way past the Strikers defence and Anderson, scoring a magnificent solo goal to make it 2-1.

Anderson and Michael were then involved in a nasty challenge which left them both down, with Anderson coming out the worse of the two. Anderson needed her defenders to take goal kicks from that point onwards.

Jazmin White brought the crowd to life again just before the break by netting an equaliser. Ponting ran out, White chipped over her head and just like that it was level as the teams headed into the sheds.

In the second half, Chambers grabbed her second, darting around the keeper and coolly finishing into the bottom left to give the Warriors the lead again. Another two goals for Chambers would follow, while Ella McConnen and Cane rounded off what was an impressive day for the travelling Warriors.

Taroona FC 0
Launceston United 3 (Madison Gilpin, Danielle Gunton, Laura Dickinson)

After last week’s shock loss to Olympia, Launceston United netted an impressive 3-0 away win over Taroona at Kelvedon Park.

Three unanswered goals from Gilpin, Guton and Dickinson were enough for the vital three points on the road.

Launceston United will host New Town White Eagles in the Statewide Cup next Saturday at Birch Ave, while Taroona travel to Wentworth Park to face Clarence Zebras.

WSL will have a week’s break as the Statewide Cup quarter-finals take centre stage. B90 will bring you coverage of the cup as the season heats up.
