Tasmanian Women’s Super League returned after a weekend’s break due to the Cup – wins on the road, hat-trick heroics and a surprise result have turned the league upside down!
Match of the Round: Olympia Warriors v South Hobart
Olympia Warriors 0 South Hobart 0 at Warrior Park.
South Hobart made their name heard despite all their injury woes, holding Champions Olympia to a well deserved 0-0 draw. The result followed a 3-0 home loss for South in the quarter-finals of the Statewide Cup.
Selection news for South appeared grim with Pishon Choi still not recovered after her heavy knock last week. Olympia also had to make a change up top with Meggie Goscombe ruled out due to injury.
Olympia controlled the overall play in the first-half but were unable to break down the South defence. South slowly worked their way into the forward third with Bridie Cooling and Ruby Batchelor linking up the flanks.
Misty Olsen’s set-piece delivery looked to have worked after Kacee Ponting made an error which saw Sophie Westwood tapping into the bottom right, much to the delight of the travelling side. Unfortunately as Westwood lay on the ground next to Eve Swain and Issi Declerck, the dreaded offside flag went up. Credit to Westwood for braving a smile after that and getting on with it.
Madi Chambers went down after a nasty knock to the ground which appeared to be a head concern. South’s Eleni Mountsatsos tended to her fallen opponent immediately and signalled for help from medical staff. Thankfully Chambers walked off okay.
An Inocent Michael effort could only bounce off the crossbar, and this proved to be the only real chance for a breakthrough in the second half, with both teams focused on defence.
This was a well-earned point for South, while Olympia remain in third, three points off leaders Clarence Zebras.
Launceston United 5 (Sofie Verhaegen, OG, Jess Robinson x3) Kingborough Lions 2 (Laura Davis, Kate Bonertz-Benn) at Birch Ave.
A Jess Robinson hat-trick has helped Launceston United to an impressive 5-2 win over Kingborough Lions at Birch Ave.
United’s Sofie Verhaegen netted the opener, but an equaliser from Laura Davis brought the scores back to 1-1.
Jess McCallum-Smith helped set up the second but it would be the Lions defence that bundled this one in to give United the lead before the break.
Robinson finished off the Lions in the second half with three goals of her own and a late goal from Kate Bonertz-Benn proved to only be consolation.
Devonport Strikers 1 (Emily Smith) Clarence Zebras 4 (Sophie Fone, Caitlin Stalker, Mady O’Brien and Zoe Nichols)
