Tasmania’s Women’s Super League round 5 only saw one match due to some heavy weather ruling out Sunday’s action. Beyond 90 looks back at all the news.
Match of the Round: Clarence Zebras v Olympia Warriors
POSTPONED
Clarence headed into Round 5 coming off a disappointing 1-1 draw with Ulverstone. Selina Steventon’s opening goal on the road at the Showgrounds wasn’t enough for the travelling Zebras after Lucy Reimer’s equaliser cancelled out the lead.
Returning to their stomping grounds at Wentworth Park, this was a must win clash for the Zebras. They have a very strong win record on the Eastern Shore at Wentworth but they also had a big task in title leaders Olympia.
Olympia on the other hand were oozing with confidence after a massive 9-0 win over University. Last year’s hurt from a disappointing second place finish is still in tact. From what we have seen so far this season, this is a new determined Olympia.
Unfortunately Tasmania had some torrential rain on Saturday night and Clarence’s home ground was not exempt, so Football Tasmania had no choice but to call the blockbuster off. It’s likely that it will happen in a midweek fixture in the near future.
South Hobart 1 (Eliane Fader 12′) Ulverstone SC 1 (Eli Cropp 58′)
After an incredible 7-2 away win over the Lions at ‘The Den’, South were back at D’Arcy St for their second home game of the campaign. Last time they were there Clarence stormed to an impressive 4-0 victory, but with South coming off two wins in a row they had to be going into this one with the confidence flowing.
Ulverstone travelled to Hobart also full of optimism after their upset 1-1 draw with then title leaders Clarence. Being fifth place is never great in a six team competition, but this was their second comeback draw after earlier heroics in a 2-2 draw with University.
Ulverstone were able to snatch another point on the road after Eli Cropp’s penalty took the win away from South. Eliane Fader opened the scoring for the home side in the early minutes with a shot from range into the bottom corner.
Beyond 90 spoke to Eli Cropp after the match.
“I think it was a competitive game,” Cropp said.
“Although sometimes a little too end to end for my liking – we definitely needed to slow the game down.
“We did a better job in the second half of playing to feet and had a very strong defensive performance from our defensive mids and defence.
“Hopefully with a home game next week against the Lions, and the benefit of a larger bench we’ll be able to get our first win!”
University SC v Kingborough Lions
POSTPONED
University returned to Olinda Grove with their tail behind their heads after a 9-0 loss at Warrior Park. The Bees had truly been stung, with one draw and three losses things weren’t looking good for the newest side in the WSL.
Kingborough were also coming off a big home loss and it appeared that the Lions had lost their roar. Coming into the season Lions looked like they could be the surprise packet in the title race. Kingborough opened with a great 3-1 win on the road over Ulverstone at the Showgrounds, but haven’t tasted victory since.
Perhaps fortunately for both sides considering their form, Olinda Grove was also deemed unsuitable for play due to the weather.
