Tasmania’s Women’s Super League has reached the halfway point with Round 7 concluding and what a weekend it was! Beyond 90 looks back at a super weekend of football on the Apple Isle.

Ulverstone were returning to their stomping grounds after last week’s Round 6 gritty 1-0 win over Kingborough at the Showgrounds. University have really struggled this year so they were desperate to get any positive result away from Olinda Grove.

For Ulverstone, Lucy Reimer’s efforts down the left wing finally paid dividends. Eli Cropp contributed to the scoring yet again in consecutive weeks with a tidy through-ball to Reimer, who calmly finished into the far corner for the only goal of the day.

Beyond 90 spoke to Reimer after the match.

“It probably wasn’t one of our best games,” Reimer said.

“We fought through to the end to hang on to the win. I’m really proud of the girls for hanging in there.

“We are looking forward to the break next week. Chance to recharge!”

Clarence had just come off an impressive 10-2 win over University last week so their confidence must have been high. Meanwhile, South Hobart crashed down to earth with a 3-0 defeat at the hands of title leaders Olympia, so they were heading into this with a point to prove.

South’s Phoebe Djakic equalised early in the first half with a fantastic penalty kick, but Allie Berry wasn’t to be outdone and she continued her scoring ways with a brace which led the Zebras to the three points.

Beyond 90 spoke to Zebras’ Danielle Kannegiesser after the game.

“It was an ugly game of football in ugly conditions,” Kannegiesser said.

“I’m proud of the girls battling through the conditions and getting the job done.

“We will need to focus on putting away our chances against an extremely strong Olympia team. The girls are looking forward to the challenge!”

Olympia Warriors 8 (Bonnie Davies 4′ 70′, Olivia Bomford 10′, Madi Chambers 24′ 39′ 80′, Mia Cane 30′, Charlotte Chambers 42′) Kingborough Lions United 0 at Warrior Park

Olympia seem to not even be out of second gear this season. With six clean sheets and six wins it’s no wonder the Eastern Shore Warriors are delighted that the 2020 season went ahead.

Madi Chambers was the star of the day with her hat-trick heroics while Golden Boot leader Bonnie Davies also chimed in with a brace.

Lions keeper Olivia Gardner tried to combine with defender Airlee Lawson but the vibrant Bonnie Davies was able to pressure her off the ball and made her presence known. Davies, ever determined, then converted for the Warriors’ first.

Olivia Bomford made it two after getting onto Madi Chambers’s wonderfully looping high cross and finishing past the keeper with ease.

Davies turned provider, sending in a fantastic cross to the waiting Madi Chambers, who took on all defenders and slotted it home. Mia Cane added to the growing tally, getting onto another cross and scoring past her former Lions teammates.

Cane also contributed to the next goal with an assist for Madi Chambers, who was able to finish cooly past Gardner. Charlotte Chambers completed a six-goal first half after a scramble for the ball enabled her to finish.

6-0 at half-time. Is there anything this side can’t do?

Davies completed her brace with a blistering run through the defence and a powerful finish. Madi Chambers completed her hat-trick after a collision with Gardner resulted in the ball falling to Chambers to score.

Beyond 90 spoke to Olympia’s Coach Alastair Russell after the match.

“I’m very proud of every single player today, especially the first half which I felt was a pretty complete performance,” Russell said.
