Super-subs Neil Bennett and Molly Appleton join the team while Dale and Maj tend to some match fitness issues. There’s plenty to keep us happy, whether it’s a left footed goal (Eric), Matildas abroad (Steffen) or a Victorian shining brightly (Cheryl).
History: Shelley Youman, Matildas Cap 95
Matildas Debut: 1996 (played for the national team until 1999)
Grassroots Club: Charlestown Hotspurs
Appearances: 21 (20 A internationals)
A diminutive midfielder from Northern NSW, Shelley was a rare player in that she debuted in her late 20s (28). Strong, clever and wily, Shelley led the team on and off the pitch.
She was part of the AIS live-in squad and had her family stay in the modest digs – a true pioneer for Matildas parents. A low centre of gravity, she could change the nature of a game in a flash. With Youman and Forman in the midfield, Australia was feared and difficult to break down.
