Day three of the Women’s World Cup featured two games from Group C – including the Matildas’ first appearance at the tournament – and one from Group D.

AUSTRALIA V ITALY

Italy claimed the first upset victory of the 2019 World Cup by defeating Australia 2-1 in their Group C opener, courtesy of a late winner at the Stade du Hainaut in Valenciennes.

The Matildas led 1-0 at the break in a strong half punctuated by a Sam Kerr penalty, which was saved by keeper Giuliani but slotted into the net off the rebound.

A Barbara Bonansea double in the second half, including a goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time, meant the Azzurre would claim the three points.

BRAZIL V JAMAICA

A strong showing by Jamaican keeper Sydney Schneider was unable to prevent Brazil recording a convincing 3-0 win in the other Group C encounter. Cristiane led the way for the Brazilians, netting a hat trick.

Cristiane’s strong showing allayed any fears Brazilian fans may have had regarding Marta’s absence today. She first powered in a header on the 15 minute mark to take Brazil to a 1-0 half time lead. Two further goals in the second half both required VAR verification to confirm that they crossed the goal line.

Jamaica occasionally troubled Brazil with their pace but were unable to capitalise on their few chances.

The game was Brazilian midfielder Formiga’s opening appearance at a record seventh World Cup.

ENGLAND V SCOTLAND

A dynamic first half by England saw them overcome Scotland 2-1 in the first Group D game of the World Cup.

Scotland’s gritty performance in the second period caused England some anxious moments, but it was not enough to overcome England’s 2-0 half time lead.

England’s first goal came courtesy of a Nikita Parris penalty in the 14th minute, after a handball in the Scottish penalty box.

A second English goal was scored in the 40th minute by Ellen White. Scotland failed to clear the ball after breaking down an English incursion in the penalty box, leaving White to curl the ball home.

Claire Emslie replied for Scotland in the 79th minute, doing well under pressure to rifle the ball into the top of the net, but England were able to hold Scotland out in a nervy last 10 minutes and come away with the three points.

England 2 (Parris 14′ White 40′)

Scotland 1 (Emslie 79′)
