Aussies in Nordic football has been a recurring theme over the years and 2023 is no different. Read on to see how Aussies in the Nordic leagues (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Iceland) fared during the past week!
Round 12 of the Damallsvenskan was a mixed bag for the Aussies, but off the field there was terrific personal news for one of our Matildas!
Aivi Luik‘s BK Häcken holds a four-point lead at the top of the ladder after dispatching second-from-bottom IF Brommapojkarna 6-0 away from home. Luik played 80 minutes before being substituted.
Kyra Cooney-Cross played a full match as Hammarby won 3-0 away against Örebro. The victory over a team camped in the bottom three ensures Hammarby’s continued place in the top three.
Chelsie Dawber‘s eleventh-placed IFK Norrköping took on fifth-placed Kristianstads at home but came away with a 2-0 loss. Dawber entered the game in the 68th minute.
FC Rosengård may have been disappointed with their 0-0 away draw against tenth-placed Uppsala and their hard-working defence. Nonetheless, the result keeps Teagan Micah‘s team in sixth and within reach of the top four. While Micah didn’t make an on-field appearance, the match marks her first listing on a matchday team sheet since suffering a concussion in December.
We’ve saved the best for last: Katrina Gorry copped a yellow card, scored a belter and shared some joyous news. Her partner Clara Markstedt has been one of Vittsjö GIK‘s leading strikers for several years.
Despite Gorry’s on-field efforts, her seventh-placed team lost 2-1 away to fourth-placed Linköping – all three goals were of exceptional quality. Charli Grant and Gorry both put in full shifts, while Clare Polkinghorne remains unavailable.

AGF finished the Elitedivisionen promotion / relegation playoffs with a 2-2 away draw against Aalborg. Matilda McNamara scored in the second half (see below) and played a full game, which incredibly means she played in every minute of AGF’s 2022-23 league campaign. Ally Green played the first 64 minutes – it’s good to see the Football Fern (and former Young Matilda) earn regular starts after her move from Vålerenga in Norway.
There were smiles on both sides at the final whistle, as the draw was enough for Aalborg to finish second in the playoffs, meaning they will join AGF for the 2023-24 Elitedivisionen season.

FC Nordsjælland finished the Elitedivisionen Championship round with a 4-0 away triumph over KoldingQ. Winonah Heatley played a full game, which is promising for our hopes of seeing her play in the Danish Cup Final. Nordsjælland meet Fortuna Hjørring in the Final on June 22.
Brann Kvinner played an excellent 1-1 away draw with ladder toppers Vålerenga in Round 14 of the Toppserien. Larissa Crummer started and played 73 minutes, while Tameka Yallop did not take part and remains unavailable. Brann is currently one point away from the top four.

Although the 2023 Besta Deild Kvenna competition (rebadged last season from the Úrvalsdeild) kicked off on April 26th, as yet no Aussies have signed up to compete. If the situation changes, the Aussies in Nordic Football wrap will be sure to cover it!
