Round 4 saw many of our Australians and New Zealanders abroad getting involved – most notably, Sam Kerr found the back of the net and Caitlin Foord set up a neat goal for Arsenal. Keep reading to find out more!

Tottenham 0 – 1 Manchester United

The first game of Round 4 saw Manchester United provisionally rise to the top of the table after beating Tottenham 1-0. Millie Turner scored the lone goal for Manchester United in the middle of the second half from a looping header.

Alanna Kennedy started in the midfield for Tottenham and was replaced by Kit Graham in the 74th minute of the match, while New Zealand’s Ria Percival once again featured for the full 90 minutes.

Christen Press and Tobin Heath also made their first Women’s Super League starts on Saturday, while the league continues to not-so-patiently wait for Alex Morgan’s Tottenham debut.

Brighton & Hove Albion 0 – 5 Arsenal

Arsenal secured their fourth win in a row on Sunday, placing them back at the top of the table. Vivianne Miedema scored a brace, with goals also recorded from Danielle van de Donk, Jennifer Beattie and Lotte Wubben-Moy.

Rebekah Stott played the full match for Brighton at centre back, while Caitlin Foord made her second starting appearance for Arsenal before being substituted for Ruby Mace in the 78th minute. Foord set up Arsenal’s second goal of the match with a neat ball from the by-line. Lydia Williams had her name on the team sheet this weekend, however Steph Catley is still out due to injury.

Everton 3 – 1 West Ham

Everton took all three points this week on home soil against West Ham. Nicoline Sorensen gave the Toffees an early lead before Kenza Dali finished from outside the area to make the score line even at half time. Lucy Graham was an impact sub for her side, scoring two goals in the last half hour of the match to make the final result 3-1.

Emily Van Egmond and Mackenzie Arnold both played the full 90 minutes for West Ham United, with Van Egmond almost adding her name to the scoresheet when Rachel Daly’s corner found her head after 60 minutes of play. Hayley Raso was subbed into the game on 61 minutes to replace Sorensen.

Reading 0 – 1 Birmingham City

Birmingham recorded their first win and first points of the season this week when they beat Reading 1-0 away from home at Madejski Stadium. Claudia Walker’s goal, set-up from Sarah Mayling’s cross, was all that separated these teams at the full-time whistle.

In a game mostly dominated by Reading, they were unlucky not to get some points from the match. Reading held 62% of possession and tallied up 22 shots compared to Birmingham’s five. It’s their second loss in a row after winning the first two matches of the season – Reading are now sitting in sixth place while Birmingham are in eighth.

Chelsea 3 – 1 Manchester City

It was an intense game between Chelsea and Manchester United on Sunday, with two controversial penalties for handballs awarded. Chelsea’s Maren Mjelde scored the first penalty after the referee judged the ball had hit Ellen White’s arm, although the replay showed it had actually hit Demi Stokes’ hip.

After a few earlier misses, Sam Kerr finally got on the end of a cross from Fran Kirby in the 57th minute, putting Chelsea up by two goals. Midway through the second half, it was City’s turn to benefit from a handball penalty – this time Millie Bright was the guilty party, with Chloe Kelly stepping up to smash the ball into the roof of the net. Six minutes later, Kirby capitalised on a City mistake, stealing the ball and slotting it into the back of the net to make the final score 3-1.
