Another exciting season of women’s football in Spain is rapidly approaching with the Primera Iberdrola set to kick off this weekend.

There are many more competitions in Spain besides the Primera Iberdrola to get excited about with the Copa de la Reina (Queen’s Cup), Supercopa de España Femenina (Spanish Women’s Super Cup), and two Spanish teams – FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid – will feature in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

This season will also feature 18 teams instead of the usual 16, as none of the teams were regulated due to the conclusion of the 2019/20 season being cancelled. However, two 2nd division teams – Eibar and Santa Teresa CD – were promoted, creating a new format for this upcoming season.

Last season saw FC Barcelona go undefeated in the league with 19 wins and 2 draws, before they were named league winners for the first time since the 2014/15 season. This was Barcelona’s 5th Primera Iberdrola league title which ties them with Athletic Bilbao for the most league titles.

Although those two prominent clubs have dominated the league in terms of titles, another prominent club, Atlético Madrid, won three consecutive league titles for the 2016/17, 2017/18, and 2018/19 seasons. They always pose a threat to being league contenders and usually provide Barcelona with their most challenging matches deemed the “El Clásico” by women’s football in Spain standards.

While on the subject of prominent clubs and El Clásico, Real Madrid – formerly CD Tacón – will officially field their first women’s team this season and certainly have a point to prove. It’s worth noting that Real Madrid’s first match will be against Barcelona. Last year, when CD Tacón travelled to Barcelona for their opening match of the 2019/20 season, the home team were the clear victors in an astounding 9-1 win. This set the tone for Barça as they cruised pretty comfortably on their way to winning another league title.

This season will feature three Australians playing for three different clubs across the league. Alex Chidiac’s Atlético Madrid will be hoping to keep their long run of competing for the top of the table going after finishing as runners-up last season. Finishing second means they qualify for yet another season of UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Jenna McCormick, who recently transferred to Real Betis, claimed the Copa de Andalucía with her new teammates. Betis ended the season last year in 12th place and will be wanting to make a huge jump this season. They are certainly looking primed to do so.

Sevilla, who finished just two points ahead of Betis last season in 11th place, will also feature the third and final Australian you’ll be able to see in the Primera Iberdrola this season, Aivi Luik. Luik and her teammates certainly have the opportunity to pose a threat in the league, but will need to improve off of their last season.

The Primera Iberdrola will be streamed over various channels, but every match week will feature different matches that will actually be viewable this season. Real Madrid will stream all their home matches, while Barcelona will stream all of their home matches and Champions League matches on their subscription services Barça TV and Barça TV+.

Other teams are in control of whether they stream their home games or not, but ultimately a VPN is likely needed in order to follow games that will be featured on channels in Spain. Announcements will be made by the teams as to where you can watch games that won’t be streamed on their own network.
