Tasmania’s Women’s Super League Round 6 has come and gone. Beyond 90 looks back at all the action.

Match of the Round: South Hobart v Olympia Warriors

South Hobart have really come into themselves this season with a youthful spark arriving at D’Arcy St. Sitting 3rd and in good contention for the title chase, South welcomed the challenge of ladder leaders Olympia.

The last time they played was in the opening round. South were the 2019 wooden spooners, and at Olympia’s fortress Warrior Park you might have said the match was already won on paper, but that turned out not to be the case. Although South went down by a single goal, this was a huge improvement on recent efforts and even with the loss their coach Craig Westwood showed lots of pride.

Olympia had the week off after torrential weather delayed the highly anticipated clash against Clarence Zebras. With four wins and zero goals conceded the Eastern shore club have truly come to play this season. Warriors needed to keep the momentum going to try and jump away from the Zebras title challenge.

Olympia’s Bonnie Davies got the breakthrough right on the 20 minute mark. She ran onto a lovely through ball from midfield, danced around South keeper Georgie McMullen and finished into an open net.

Olivia Bomford was the next to get on the score sheet, catching McMullen off her line and chipping her with ease from 30 yards out!

Right before half-time Davies was involved once again. She had a one-on-one with the keeper and finished with sheer power into the bottom right corner.

After a scoreless second half, Olympia walked away from D’Arcy St with three goals and three points.

Beyond 90 spoke to Olivia Bomford after the match.

“Another solid performance this week for us in tough conditions,” Bomford said.

“We’re looking really strong defensively and Mia and Bonnie are starting to combine really well and look dangerous up top.

“We’ll just keep taking things game by game and look forward to a mid-week fixture against Clarence Zebras in a couple of weeks time.”

Ulverstone returned to the Showgrounds with confidence in their stride. Although still yet to register their first win, Ulverstone have been impressive in recent weeks. The 2018 Champions may not be in contention this year, but they are showing real fight in 2020, having snatched victories from the hands of University, Clarence Zebras and South Hobart.

Kingborough on the other hand have had a disappointing campaign but this week returned to the site of their Round 1 win over the Northern club. If the Lions really wanted to have a resurgence on their season this was the game they needed to win.

Lions keeper Olivia Gardner made her season debut after being left out of the squad in recent weeks, replacing Erika Mackintosh.

Ulverstone’s Eli Cropp scored the only goal of the match, it was also her second in two weeks. Her side were able to hold on and finally clinch their first win of the season.

Beyond 90 spoke to Ulverstone goalkeeper Georgia Anderson after the match.

“It’s great to get our first 3 points,” Anderson said. “I feel that we have been good value with our performances in recent weeks and today’s result shows it.”

“Fair play to Kingborough who came up here fighting and I wish them the best for the season.”

Clarence Zebras were set to host Olympia last week in a mouthwatering clash, but unfortunately the Tasmanian weather robbed us of that matchup as Wentworth Park was closed. Uni’s Olinda Grove suffered a similar fate that weekend and was still unavailable, prompting Football Tasmania to change the venue for Zebras v Uni to KGV Park. Frustrations must have been flowing in both camps but as they say, “there is always next week”.

Zoe Nichols led the way for Clarence’s victory with four goals while Caitlin Stalker grabbed a hat-trick to round off one big day for the Zebras.

Beyond 90 spoke to Allie Berry after the match.

“It was great to be back on the park after I had a few weeks off with an injury,” Berry said.

“The girls were pumped and ready to go and I think that showed with the energy out on the park. A few simple mistakes cost us, but overall quite happy with the performance. Hopefully we can tighten up a few things and be consistent for the whole 90 minutes.”

Football Tasmania earlier this week confirmed the highly anticipated clash between Olympia and Clarence Zebras, which was scheduled to take place last week, will now take place on Wednesday September 2nd under lights at Wentworth Park.
